    Accommodation

    Samara Karoo Reserve

Pack for a Purpose does not condone visiting orphanages, as this can often lead to negative impacts on children. The accommodation or tour company working with the orphanage will deliver the supplies in a coordinated and respectful way so that the children can benefit from them. Your generosity is not diminished because you do not interact with the children.

    Project #1

Vuyani Safe Haven is a registered Child and Youth Care Centre (Children’s Home) situated in Graaff-Reinet. Poverty, unemployment and hopelessness in this semi-rural area lead to a high incidence of alcohol and drug abuse, oftentimes causing the break-up of the protective family-unit. Vulnerable children are placed by court order into Vuyani’s interim care for an assessment period of 6 months which might lead to an intervention period of 2 years or longer. The Safe Haven serves about 37 children from babies to 18 years and beyond, with the belief that joy grows through care.

In addition, Samara hosts an annual Christmas Party for the children of Vuyani Safe Haven in early December to provide them with a Christmas celebration that all children deserve.

    Project #2

Graaff Reinet Animal Welfare Society (GRAWS) started as a NPO when the SPCA closed down in 2022. GRAWS provides a wide variety of services, from boarding animals to rescuing neglected pets and fighting abuse. They house over 50 dogs and 50 cats at any given time with a staff of four dedicated permanent workers: a manager, a caretaker and two general workers. On an average day, they help about 20 animals, including dogs, cats, horses, wild animals and livestock. Graaff Reinet Animal Welfare Society has a passion for saving and changing the lives of animals for the better and will continue to do so for as long as they possibly can.

    Project #3

Boundless Protective Workshop is a non-profit organization for adults with disabilities from groups in Graaff-Reinet, Eastern Cape. The Workshop provides an opportunity for people with physical, psychological, or mental disabilities who are unable to compete in the open labour market, to learn income-generating skills. They are taught basic numeracy and literary skills and can enjoy other tasks such as gardening, beadwork and sanding of items. Boundless will continue to strive to be a Centre of Excellence within the Disability sector. As a faith-based organisation, Boundless seeks to serve with the heart of Jesus, to honour and serve those living with disabilities, to make a difference in their lives and the community.

    Project #4

An Anti-Poaching initiative to help make a difference for the local rhinos.

Listed on this page are the specific needs requested by the community project(s) so you can choose exactly what to pack for a purpose and express your gratitude to the local community with the supplies you take them. If you prefer, you may reach out directly to them to inquire about items which may be available for purchase locally. Arranging visits to community projects is beyond the scope of our mission. If you wish to visit a project, contact the participant and they can let you know what is possible.

Candy and balloons are not on the needs list as they are harmful for the children and the environment for the following reasons:
    • Few of the children benefiting from these projects have access to toothpaste, toothbrushes, or a dentist. The candy promotes cavities.
    • The balloons once they become deflated are a choking hazard for local wildlife.

Instead of taking candy or balloons, use that space for additional requested supplies, as they are priceless.
