Lilayi Lodge

Project #1

The Elephant Orphanage Project offers sanctuary for defenseless, abandoned elephant calves, often the tragic victims of poaching and human conflict.

Under the age of two, young elephants are incredibly vulnerable and dependent. Many do not survive without intricate care and nutrient-rich milk from their mothers.

At the Lilayi Elephant Nursery, these fragile elephants are cared for around the clock (A milk-dependent orphan requires special milk formula every three hours!).

Project #2

Alongside the Elephant Orphanage Project, Game Rangers International also currently supports environmental education in thirty remote, rural schools and ten Lusaka-based schools reaching over 7,000 children through the Muzovu Awareness Project. (“Muzovu” means “elephant” in the local Ilya dialect.)

GRI works in partnership with the Wildlife & Environment Conservation Society of Zambia and ZAWA to raise, promote, and support conservation awareness and environmental education through teacher workshops, environmental lessons and activities, and through the distribution of much needed educational resources.

In 2014, the Muzovu Awareness Project is expanding to provide educational outreach to schools in Northern KNP as well as the Lusaka district, which will utilize the orphaned elephants at EOP Lilayi Elephant Nursery to inspire and engage young minds into conservation and environmental awareness.

Initiatives Supported

All the needs are current as of September 29, 2016

Listed on this page are the specific needs requested by the community project(s) so you can choose exactly what to pack for a purpose and express your gratitude to the local community with the supplies you take them.

Candy and balloons are not on the needs list as they are harmful for the children and the environment for the following reasons:
• Few of the children benefiting from these projects have access to toothpaste, toothbrushes, or a dentist. The candy promotes cavities.
• The balloons once they become deflated are a choking hazard for local wildlife.

Instead of taking candy or balloons, use that space for additional requested supplies, as they are priceless.
