Somalisa Camp

Project #1

Through its registered charity, African Bush Camps Foundation, Somalisa Camp supports schools and education in the Dete area.

Currently, it mainly supports Hwange Main Camp Primary School, a school of 114 students with 37 orphans and vulnerable children, and Mambanje Primary School, a very remote school of 150 students with 72 orphans and vulnerable children.

The foundation provides all of the orphans and vulnerable children with their school fees and uniforms as well as provides both of the schools with an additional full time teacher and assists by providing stationary, textbooks, and sports equipment.

The foundation also assists with general fundraising, environmental and health awareness events, and sporting events. It also sponsors 22 students in High School Scholarships to boarding schools.

Project #2

The Thandanani Sewing Project, the Vukazenzele Poultry Project, and the Vukani Group are income-generating projects in the Dete and surrounding areas. The Vukani Group has an organic market garden as well as a beading and jewelry project.

We also hold sporting events which bring together all of the 17 villages in the area to spread community spirit. We use these events also as a platform to educate the community about poaching, environmental awareness, and health.

Listed on this page are the specific needs requested by the community project(s) so you can choose exactly what to pack for a purpose and express your gratitude to the local community with the supplies you take them.

Candy and balloons are not on the needs list as they are harmful for the children and the environment for the following reasons:
• Few of the children benefiting from these projects have access to toothpaste, toothbrushes, or a dentist. The candy promotes cavities.
• The balloons once they become deflated are a choking hazard for local wildlife.

Instead of taking candy or balloons, use that space for additional requested supplies, as they are priceless.
