La Brisa Loca Hostel works with Colombia sin Fronteras and Mariposas Amarillas, which are two, local foundations. They both provide after-school programs that focus on literacy and numeracy as well as teach life skills and values. They also provide a safe space for children in at-risk communities. Colombia sin Fronteras and Mariposas Amarillas are in need of school supplies and sports equipment for their weekly sports days.
The hostel also works with Peace Corps volunteers who work in Santa Marta primarily with public school education and are involved in many youth development projects. These projects include arts and crafts and material development for public school teachers. Peace Corps volunteers are always looking for supplies to run activities at a low cost for their participants.
General School Supplies:
Chalk, Colored Construction Paper, Colored Pencils, Crayons, Dry-Erase Markers, and English Stickers
(English) Math and Word
(English and Spanish) Age Appropriate Story Books
Acrylic Paints and Brushes, Craft Scissors, and Watercolor Paints and Brushes
Frisbees, Inflation Pumps, Jump Ropes, and Soccer Balls
New or Gently Used Children’s Clothing and Shoes
Candy and balloons are not on the needs list as they are harmful for the children and the environment for the following reasons:
• Few of the children benefiting from these projects have access to toothpaste, toothbrushes, or a dentist. The candy promotes cavities.
• The balloons once they become deflated are a choking hazard for local wildlife.
Instead of taking candy or balloons, use that space for additional requested supplies, as they are priceless.
