    Accommodation

    Morukuru Family De Hoop

Pack for a Purpose does not condone visiting orphanages, as this can often lead to negative impacts on children. The accommodation or tour company working with the orphanage will deliver the supplies in a coordinated and respectful way so that the children can benefit from them. Your generosity is not diminished because you do not interact with the children.

    Project #1

Ouplaas EK Primary School is a rural primary school located approximately 8km from the main gate of the De Hoop Nature Reserve. The school caters for 139 learners and is staffed by five dedicated educators. Most of the students are from the local farming community and are growing up in financially challenged households. Morukuru Family de Hoop co-ordinates projects at the school to both educate and improve the facilities for the children.

    Project #2

Elim Home cares for the most severely intellectually and physically disabled children and young adults from disadvantaged communities. The Home is one of only very few full-time residential facilities for disabled children in the Western Cape. Morukuru Family De Hoop assists in the collection of much-needed items to make life easier for these children with unique needs.

    Project #3

Nuwerus Nasorg Centre is located in the quaint village of Napier. Beverly Doveton and her dedicated team operate a number of different projects within their community from the centre. Primarily starting as an after school care facility for children whose parents could not afford for someone to look after their children in the afternoon, Nuwerus has become a beacon of hope for the community. They offer a safehouse to children that are sexually molested and abused within the community. They also have a feeding programme, whereby they distribute food parcels to those in need.

Listed on this page are the specific needs requested by the community project(s) so you can choose exactly what to pack for a purpose and express your gratitude to the local community with the supplies you take them. If you prefer, you may reach out directly to them to inquire about items which may be available for purchase locally. Arranging visits to community projects is beyond the scope of our mission. If you wish to visit a project, contact the participant and they can let you know what is possible.

Candy and balloons are not on the needs list as they are harmful for the children and the environment for the following reasons:
    • Few of the children benefiting from these projects have access to toothpaste, toothbrushes, or a dentist. The candy promotes cavities.
    • The balloons once they become deflated are a choking hazard for local wildlife.

Instead of taking candy or balloons, use that space for additional requested supplies, as they are priceless.
