    Project #1

The Los Angeles School is located in Los Angeles, Drake Bay. It serves approximately 20 children in one classroom, from first grade through sixth grade. The school is located in a particularly rural area, and some students have to walk long distances to get to school. It is also the only venue that exists in this community. Being a very rural area, parents’ access to school supplies is often difficult because of the long distance to more urban areas.

    Project #2

El Refugio School is located in the community of Caletas, a small but very pretty seaside village in the Drake Bay area about 5 kilometers south of Agujitas (central Bahia Drake). It is a special place because it can only be reached by foot or by sea; there is no public transportation because there are no roads or trails.

The school has ten children who attend a school, which only has one teacher for all grades and all subjects. This school did not have proper maintenance for a long time, and due to its proximity to the sea and the forest, deteriorates easily.

The families in this community have low incomes and cannot meet the infrastructure needs, but they do make efforts to organize activities.

    Project #3

Drake Bay College is the only school that exists in the area.

In 2012 the school was affected by a landslide that destroyed the surrounding community, causing the displacement of students. Currently, 94 students are taught at the community hall, which has been fitted with false walls to separate the levels, but the noise and heat makes it impossible for the young people to concentrate.

Many of the students’ families have very low incomes and cannot afford the uniform or school supplies necessary to attend classes. Although the request to build a new school was approved by local government in 2013, it is still not possible because of a lack of available drinking water (one of the major problems in the area).

    Initiatives Supported

All the needs are current as of July 16, 2021
Note: Location is approximated. If you see a lodging that is misplaced or missing, please contact us .

Listed on this page are the specific needs requested by the community project(s) so you can choose exactly what to pack for a purpose and express your gratitude to the local community with the supplies you take them. If you prefer, you may reach out directly to them to inquire about items which may be available for purchase locally. Arranging visits to community projects is beyond the scope of our mission. If you wish to visit a project, contact the participant and they can let you know what is possible.

Candy and balloons are not on the needs list as they are harmful for the children and the environment for the following reasons:
    • Few of the children benefiting from these projects have access to toothpaste, toothbrushes, or a dentist. The candy promotes cavities.
    • The balloons once they become deflated are a choking hazard for local wildlife.

Instead of taking candy or balloons, use that space for additional requested supplies, as they are priceless.
