Many of the following requested items can be purchased locally and it is our pleasure at Sumatra Adventure Holidays to facilitate this for you at your request. We can arrange for them to be purchased prior to your arrival or assign a person to go out shopping with you, should you wish. If you desire, you can also attend the distribution and volunteer for a few hours to teach our beneficiaries some new skills. If you wish to Pack for a Purpose locally in this fashion, please contact us at enquiries@sumatraadventureholidays.com and we will be happy to make the arrangements for you.

Our Pack for a Purpose Project focuses on the provision of educational supplies to assist with our children’s learning at the primary schools in the local communities. This includes the Tualang Gepang Primary School (serving 170 children from ages 7 through 12 years old), the Gotong Royong Primary School (serving 230 children from ages 7 through 12 years old), and the Batu Katak Primary School (serving 120 children from ages 7 to 12 years old). Most of the children’s parents are small farmers who cannot afford good education for their children.

The Nature School at Selang Pangeran and the Batu Katak English School run a free school in the Bukit Lawang area of North Sumatra, Indonesia. The schools support 40 and 20 children, respectively, from the ages of 7 through 14 years old.

Listed on this page are the specific needs requested by the community project(s) so you can choose exactly what to pack for a purpose and express your gratitude to the local community with the supplies you take them. If you prefer, you may reach out directly to them to inquire about items which may be available for purchase locally. Arranging visits to community projects is beyond the scope of our mission. If you wish to visit a project, contact the participant and they can let you know what is possible.

Candy and balloons are not on the needs list as they are harmful for the children and the environment for the following reasons:
    • Few of the children benefiting from these projects have access to toothpaste, toothbrushes, or a dentist. The candy promotes cavities.
    • The balloons once they become deflated are a choking hazard for local wildlife.

Instead of taking candy or balloons, use that space for additional requested supplies, as they are priceless.
