Pack for a Purpose Travelers Make a Lasting Impact In Guguletu

Bayflowers Guest House Vision & Statement

It is the greatest of all mistakes to do nothing, because you can only do little. Great things are done by a series of small things brought together and small acts, when multiplied by millions of people, can transform the world!

Bayflowers Guest House is a proud member of Pack for a Purpose, an initiative that allows travelers to make a lasting impact in the community of their travel destination. With just a few saved kilos of space in a suitcase, much needed supplies are brought to schools and a priceless impact on the lives of our local children and families. We strongly promote Responsible Tourism with various initiatives. One of these initiatives is supporting Nondzame Educare Centre.

What is Responsible Tourism?

Responsible tourism involves a new and different way of managing tourism which aims to increase and maximize the benefits – economic, social and environmental – and minimizing costs for both visitor and host/destination. It  “creates better places for people to live in, and better places to visit” – a phrase coined in South Africa’s tourism capital, Cape Town.

What are the benefits? In many tourist destinations worldwide, one often finds a luxurious tourist resort, surrounded by desperate and impoverished communities and much environmental damage and wastage. Responsible tourism aims to change this – it generates economic benefits for the local people, enhancing the wellbeing of host communities. It improves working conditions and access to industry, and involves local people in decision making.

It also makes a positive contribution to the conservation of a country’s natural and cultural heritage, and to the maintenance of the world’s diversity. In the process, it provides more enjoyable experiences for visitors through connecting with local people and their cultures, and a greater understanding of and respect for a country’s cultural, social and environmental issues. Responsible tourism also focuses on minimizing negative economic, environmental and social impacts.

Nondzame Educare Centre

Nondzame Educare Centre was started in 2006 and is located in Guguletu, a Township 15km from Cape Town CBD. It is not just a Pre-School, but a safe haven of hope and happiness for more than 200 children every day. Children at Nondzame Educare Centre face many challenges and all of them are from desperately poor families and conditions.

They also have various projects that initiated through the school, i.e. Nondzame Children’s Garden, where children get involved in planting and harvesting their own food & promoting sustainable health, as well as Nondzame Children’s Breakfast Club. Because a lot of children go to school without a meal in the morning, a breakfast club was started at Laura’s home, where children eat breakfast every morning before school. Children at Nondzame Educare Centre learn how to discover their purpose & use daily positive affirmations to take action. They learn how to focus their gratitude practice to create extraordinary change. When you have the ability to imagine it, you have the ability to manifest it fully.

 Pack for a Purpose

Being part of Pack for a Purpose has given us the opportunity to create a Platform of Awareness and to communicate through others to complete the “circle of life”. We want any child to believe that you can always “take another shot” at life & to realize that when you learn to love what you have, you have everything in life!
